About

DARLENE (DEEP AR LAW ENFORCEMENT ECOSYSTEM) is an EU-funded H2020 project aiming to apply cutting-edge augmented reality (AR) technology to help Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) and first responders make more informed and rapid decisions when tackling crime and terrorism.

The project has now reached its final month. By integrating innovative AR smart glass technology, robust computer vision algorithms, and advanced 5G network architectures, DARLENE has successfully pursued the agile processing of real-time data for law enforcement agencies facing high-pressure situations. As the project concludes, we reflect on the accomplishments achieved in these three years, including the execution of two pilot use-cases that showcased the diverse capabilities of the developed solutions.

The DARLENE project is coordinated by the Centre for Research & Technology, Hellas (CERTH), and Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH) as technical manager, joined by twelve partners from ten European countries.

EuroXR 20th International Conference 2023

This conference follows a series of successful international conferences initiated in 2004 by the INTUITION Network of Excellence in Virtual and Augmented Reality, supported by the European Commission until 2008, and it was known as the EuroVR international conferences from 2014-2020.

The focus of the EuroXR conference was on novel VR/AR/MR technologies, including software systems, display technology, interaction devices, and applications. Besides papers on the latest scientific results and highlights from many application fields, the EuroXR conference series aimed at creating a unique human-dimension framework, interconnecting European and international XR communities in knowledge cross-fertilisations between researchers, technology providers, and end-users.

CERTH attended the conference with the paper “Enabling X-ray vision via multi-camera fusion for AR applications”.

Workshops

DARLENE at the “Future of Wireless 2023” Technology Workshop

The “Future of Wireless 2023” Technology Workshop is a forum where bright minds, experts and leaders of international research communities meet, share and discuss various topics focusing on the evolution of wireless network & technology and hopefully by doing so, not only will can foster ideas and inspirations from one another, we can also strengthen our relationship within the international research communities. The ambition of the workshop was to find a common understanding of where the industry is heading towards and furthermore to explore areas for future collaboration. The scope was to dive into the potential future technologies and solutions that can be beneficial for the industry, people and society.

The 2023 workshop was a live event held on 5th – 6th September, in Stockholm, Sweden, and was hosted by the Huawei Sweden R&D Center, Huawei Technologies Sweden AB.

AI Ethics: from principles to practice.

Putting “ethical” and “responsible” AI into action

KUL attended the virtual Theme Development Workshop as a panellist at the Panel Session on September 13th, 2023. The aim of the workshop was to Identify common goals between academia and industry, as well as other relevant stakeholders, and define promising approaches for European research and innovation in Artificial Intelligence.

KUL joined with the Panel Session: AI Ethics: from principles to practice. Putting “ethical” and “responsible” AI into action. The session will focus on operationalizing the AI ethical guidelines and principles. It will reflect on the shifting approach from high-level ethical principles towards legally binding obligations (e.g., in the AI Act) and practical tools (e.g., the Human Rights Impact Assessments).

DARLENE end-user training" Workshop

DARLENE attended the IEEE World Forum on Internet of Things. The hybrid event took place in Aveiro, Portugal, but the DARLENE partner and coordinator CERTH, attended the event remotely.

The event is a multiple Society initiative, aggregating the wide expertise inherent to the IoT domain. As usual, the forum consisted of a comprehensive and interesting program that brought the latest developments from industry and business world, the most influential individuals from across the breath of the IoT ecosystem, news of significant innovations and advances from the research and academic community, as well as practitioners and end-users sharing their experiences on the successes and challenges of IoT deployments. The World Forum’s ninth edition featured presentations and panels addressing how the sea and space are great domains for IoT. It also explored how IoT technologies, applications, and solutions rely on a wide ecosystem spanning space, aerial, ground, and maritime networks and harnessing the latest emerging technological trends which can be leveraged for the benefit of society and humanity.

Here is the position paper developed by CERTH and presented at the event, and some of the DARLENE slides presented as well.

Trainings

Training of Law Enforcement Officers and Joint Evaluation Workshop

Between 21st and 22nd of November 2023, the DARLENE consortium, and specifically PLV, organised the Training of Law Enforcement Officers and a Joint Evaluation Workshop at Valencia Local Police HQ, in València, Spain.

On the first day, the DARLENE partners invited LEAs to attend the training and become informed about the DARLENE technologies, as well as the ethical challenges and safeguards LEAs must bear in mind when using the DARLENE solution. They also received detailed information and training in regard to the WECN & SG glasses, and the DARLENE functionalities.

In addition, the DARLENE toolkit was explained in depth, and training sessions with the LEAs followed for them to test the DARLENE solution and provide their evaluation. Both activities, with emphasis on the training activity, were promoted in different local TV channels, and the press.

Responsible Research Brief

Translating the AI Act Requirements into Innovation

Trilateral Research crafted this brief to support researchers in innovation projects, and offer guidance on promoting responsible and ethical development while designing new technologies. The brief provides practical recommendations to help navigate the terrain of responsible research and innovation.

Here's a sneak peek at what you can expect:

  • Transforming the AI Act into Action: We break down AI Act requirements into manageable, actionable steps, enabling you to navigate legal and ethical considerations with confidence.
  • The Power of Co-Creation: we emphasize the importance of involving a diverse spectrum of stakeholders in your technology development process. From end-users to technical experts, social scientists to civil society representatives, collaboration paves the way for responsible innovation.
In a rapidly evolving technological landscape, responsible innovation is more critical than ever. Our "Responsible Research Brief" equips you with the knowledge to incorporate legal and ethical assessments into the technology design process early on and make a positive impact in innovation.

Other Activities

Dry-run and Pilot activities in Cyprus

Between the 6th and the 10th of November 2023, the DARLENE consortium met physically in Cyprus, and specifically at the Emergency Response Unit of the Cyprus Police.
In more detail, between 6-8 of November, the technical partners of the DARLENE consortium attended the Dry-run activity to test final improvements in regard to the system functionality of the DARLENE solution, taking into account legal challenges and regulations.

Between 9-10 of November, the project partners invited Police Officers of the Emergency Response to try the DARLENE solution, and provide feedback concerning its functionality. That was officially, the project’s last pilot activity, and we can say that it was implemented with great success, as the feedback provided by experts on the field, was very positive.
