Welcome to the PREPARED Newsletter in March 2024

Dear Reader,

Whilst our South African and Australian colleagues go into Autumn and our Asian teams have started the Year of the Dragon, our European partners look forward to a sunny Easter. Here is a quick recap of what our global team has been working on over the last few months.

Project updates

Guidance for Editors and Publishers

The peer-review process of academic manuscripts was even more challenging during the COVID-19 pandemic than before. In collaboration with senior editors, Dr Kate Chatfield developed guidance for editors, that can be used during a future crisis or in routine work. It provides a framework for the swift and fair identification of manuscripts that could be sent for peer review and those which could be rejected in the first stage of the peer review process.

Guidance for Research Ethics Committees

Our ICLAIM (Interdisciplinary Centre for Law, Alternative and Innovative Methods) and EUREC (Ethics, Human Rights and Emerging Technologies) teams provide recommendations and good practices for seven major challenges that research ethics committees have faced during COVID-19. This guidance on expediting research ethics review is based on literature reviews in eight languages.

New dissemination officer

Our previous dissemination officer, Enya O’Connell-Hussey, has left us and has been replaced by Dr Sean Travers. We wore funny hats to say goodbye to Enya, who was responsible for our dissemination efforts during the first 18 months of the project. Sean will guide us through the remaining 18 months. Farewell Enya and welcome Sean!

An "outstanding consortium"

Our project was reviewed by European Commission staff and an independent advisor. Here’s what they said: ā€œThe project achievements so far are highly valuable and likely to produce considerable impacts on policy-making, social science research, training, stakeholder engagement and crisis preparedness. The Consortium is outstanding and project activities have been carried out according to high standardsā€¦ā€.

Our advisor in Cape Town, Jantina de Vries, has been awarded the title of Professor. Jantina is the Director of the Ethics Lab and Professor of Medicine at the University of Cape Town. Congratulations Jantina!
