CCINDLE Newsletter: 4th Edition
| |
Welcome to the CCINDLE project newsletter, a guide to our latest work and news.
CCINDLE is an EU Horizon Europe project (No. 10048433) studying the threats to democracy and feminism, and the responses of feminist change-makers, engaging with them to strengthen their voices. CCINDLE works directly with feminist grassroots activists, institutional actors, and gender professionals, co-creating theoretical and practical knowledge on: - Anti-gender campaigns and how they challenge democracy, particularly through pathways to violence and politics of knowledge.
- Futures of society envisioned in feminist theories and practices related to democracy in Europe with respect to intersectional justice, inclusion, and participation.
- Feminist movements and feminist institutional responses to anti-gender and other anti-democratic forces.

The Polish-Belarussian border as frontier to human rights and rule of law in Europe
In August 2021, a group of 40 people from Afghanistan appeared at the Polish-Belarusian border. Although they sought asylum in Europe, the border guards did not allow them to return to Belarus or enter Poland, and instead trapped them in the border strip. The situation on the Polish-Belarusian border complicates the assessment regarding a pro-democratic change in Poland after 2023.

Why gender equality policies need to be more radical in hostile times
Prominent antifeminist mobilizations across Europe continue efforts to eclipse a feminist future. This blog zooms in on one institutional base for feminist responses: gender equality policies. Gender equality policies have undoubtably brought successes, thanks to the relentless and hard work of many dedicated institutional feminists. They are based on negotiated feminist understandings of gender inequality that had to overcome loads of resistances.

The politics of digital Anti-Gender Violence: A Call to Action for Institutions and Researchers
Digital anti-gender (AG) violence poses significant challenges for both political institutions and researchers. Mobbing campaigns, doxxing practices and trolling attacks are commonplace experiences for female politicians and feminist researchers inhabiting online spaces. While studies have primarily focused on the ideological foundations and political activism of anti-gender groups, as well as their perpetration of violence against women in politics, there’s been a notable oversight regarding the digital dimension of AG movements and their online violence.

Italy as (Yet Again) A ‘Lighthouse’ for Anti-Gender and Anti-Immigration Politics
In 2016, the President of Family Day – Difendiamo I Nostri Figli, a prominent Italian anti-gender organization, defined Italy as a ‘lighthouse’ in safeguarding Western (read as ‘Christian and white’) civilization. Since 2013, when Italian anti-gender campaigns began to emerge, the country had been framed as an outpost to counter an alleged ‘gender ideology’ (an expression purposely never translated into Italian). Since the last decade, references of attacks to ‘Italian values’ have brought anti-gender actors and right-wing parties increasingly closer, leading to a politicization of the Italian ‘anti-gender crusade’. overcome loads of resistances.

Feminist democratic innovations in policy and politics
Our partners Emanuela Lombardo and Paloma Caravantes published an article in Policy & Politics. This article examines the potential of feminist democratic innovations in policy and institutional politics. It examines how feminist democratic innovations can be conceptualised and articulated in local institutions. Combining theories on democratic governance, feminist democracy, social movements, municipalism, decentralisation, gender equality policies and state feminism, it conceptualises feminist democratic innovations in policy and politics as innovations oriented at (a) transforming knowledge, (b) transforming policymaking and public funding, (c) transforming institutions, and (d) transforming actors’ coalitions.

Feminist democratic innovations in policy and politics
Our partners Emanuela Lombardo and Paloma Caravantes published an article in Women's Studies Quarterly. The construction of feminist democratic societal projects relies on the production of feminist knowledge and ideas within social movements, as well as academic, professional, and institutional settings. In the context of a rising opposition against democracy and gender, race, and sexuality equality at a global level, the European Union has launched the call Feminisms for a New Age of Democracy with the purpose of supporting knowledge production about opposition to gender equality in Europe and feminist democratic responses.
